Han’s Side Panel
March 3, 2013 in Cockpit, General, Interior
Hi Gang!
This is the panel where Han flips the switches and cuts to the sublight engines. The original (we guesstimate) had approx 170 switches. Since we don’t know what switches were used and I’m using the cheapest commercial switch I could find, I had to do some thinking as to where the switches were going to go while keeping with the basic layout. In the end, I only removed 20 or so switches… which means I have to drill 150 holes… not to mention the holes for the LEDs…
Took all the measurements and then circled the holes to be drilled (the best part is I get to do the measurements twice – after it’s painted)
Using a wood screw and a hammer I lightly tapped a pilot hole

Another panel ready for drilling, painting and pinstriping!

The other panel needed more filler so I’m waiting for that to dry before I begin the process described above.
More to Come!

This may or may not save you some time. Get a piece of butcher paper and do your measurements and layout on it, the tape it securely to the painted panel. That way, as long as you get it lined up right you have a template and you aren’t worrying about marring up your painted surface later.
That’s a lot of holes.

Just read thru your consol build on RPF. Please forgive my shortcut post. You OBVIOUSLY know exactly what you are doing. I’ve only seen the cockpit shots til now and didn’t realize how insanely complicated that console was. So, never mind.
Still a lot of holes.

Hi S,
LOL No worries at all! There have been days when I’ve wanted to chuck the whole build I was so frustrated and couldn’t figure out an angle here or a dimension there… but it’s slowly coming together. And I welcome any and all guidance and advice. : )
Just glad you’re here enjoying the ride! And yes… that is alot of holes… and I have 120 more to drill!!!! lol

Hi G,
Was just looking at my copy of the Haynes manual at the engine page and it got me to wondering- are we interested in tying your control panels in to any controllable automation of the ship? Like turning the yoke could adjust the vectored thrust plates on the stern? Silly things like this pop into my head at random times. Do you think automation should be a topic, or is this just going to be a big prop?

Hi S,
Those are not silly things to think about! I think about it all the time! I’m assuming that many of the switches will control flood lights, interior lights and sounds, the ramp, etc. I would love to see dials that controls the radar dish! All these questions/ideas will have to be answered by Chris Lee. I’m sure he’s tinkered with the idea.
As far as the yoke control???? That would be really cool – but a tremendous task!
