Han’s Side Panel
March 3, 2013 in Cockpit, General, Interior
Hi Gang!
This is the panel where Han flips the switches and cuts to the sublight engines. The original (we guesstimate) had approx 170 switches. Since we don’t know what switches were used and I’m using the cheapest commercial switch I could find, I had to do some thinking as to where the switches were going to go while keeping with the basic layout. In the end, I only removed 20 or so switches… which means I have to drill 150 holes… not to mention the holes for the LEDs…
Took all the measurements and then circled the holes to be drilled (the best part is I get to do the measurements twice – after it’s painted)
Using a wood screw and a hammer I lightly tapped a pilot hole

Another panel ready for drilling, painting and pinstriping!

The other panel needed more filler so I’m waiting for that to dry before I begin the process described above.

FINALLY!
February 24, 2013 in Cockpit, General, Interior
Hi Gang!
I was finally able to get those dreaded upper side walls framed! After rethinking a few steps I realized what was confusing me… Now all I have to do is skin the panels and then paint and pinstriping! I added a brace on the upper panels to keep from twisting when I removed it from the assembly. This really helped out! Enjoy!

Upper Side Walls
February 23, 2013 in General
Hi Gang,
Well… I’m going to take a different approach to building these side walls. What’s happening is that wood is not 100% straight and is flexing / warping by the time I try to skin the frame. So, I’m going to build the frame while it is bolted to the other panels. This “should” ensure a near perfect fit and keep the panels from flexing too much… I hope!

Side Walls and a Platform
February 20, 2013 in Cockpit, General, Interior
Hi Gang,
Well I finally got two of the sidewalls finished. The upper side panels are killing me and might have to rebuild them for a 3rd time… I also got the center console frame built. The will help center the two side walls when everything gets bolted together. Enjoy!
I wish this process could go a little faster… : )

Side Wall Reconstruction
February 11, 2013 in General
Hi Gang,
After chatting with Stinson it turns out that the measurement/angle I used for the side walls was wrong. I was off by two degrees. So… simply put, the entire front end has to be reconstructed. Its very frutrating, but I’m going to take a different approach this time. Instead of building the frame first, I’m going to cut 1/4 inch 4X8 sheet of ply then build the frame around the ply. This should ensure no warping/bending of the frame.

Side Wall Update
February 6, 2013 in Cockpit, General, Interior
Hi Gang,
Well… As you can see from the photo below, the side wall I created was perfect! I then added the MDF skin.
During that process the frame shifed just enough and the panel no longer fits… Note how the front end of the panel raises up
Instead of MDF I’m going to cut a single large panel using a 4×8 sheet of ply and then build the frame ensuring a proper fit. Fortunately, the pinstriped panel is fine and I don’t have to rebuild either one of those.
I’ve been very frustrated the last few days… but I’ll get back to it! : )
